About Harvest Table

How Harvest Table started

With a pot of soup in 1996. Here’s the rest, how we work and who leads us.

Our story

It started with one pot of soup

In 1996, Margaret put a pot of soup on in the basement of St. Luke’s and taped a sign to the door that said “Everyone welcome.” Eleven people came the first Thursday. Within a year the line went round the block, and other churches started asking how to do it.

Today we run four community kitchens in church basements around the city, hand out emergency food packs, and work with farmers and churches in three regions overseas. We do it because Jesus fed hungry crowds, and told us to do the same.

What guides us

How we work

01

Feed people

Jesus said, “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat” (Matthew 25:35).

02

Dignity

Guests and volunteers eat at the same table, and anyone can say grace.

03

Fix the causes

We stay for years, not just for the emergency.

04

Local churches

Partners who stay after we go.

05

Sustainability

The land is God’s, so we look after it and the people on it.

06

Stewardship

Making every gift go further.

Financial integrity

Where your gift goes

We’re audited every year, and we buy food from local farmers wherever we can.
